Justin, Harrison, Amy, David Meadows
When our little boy, Harrison, was born, our world changed in an instant when we learned that he was deaf. Like any parents, we worried about what challenges he might face and what the future would hold. We quickly realized, however, that he was stronger than we could have ever imagined.
When Harrison turned one year old in 2017, he received bilateral cochlear implants, opening new opportunities for communication and connection with the world around him. Watching him respond to sounds and continue to grow and learn was an incredible milestone for our family.
That same year, genetic testing gave us another life-changing diagnosis: Usher Syndrome Type 1F. Along with being born deaf, Harrison would gradually lose his vision due to retinitis pigmentosa. The news was heartbreaking.

When he was only two years old, we began noticing that he struggled to see at night. Further testing, including an ERG, confirmed retinitis pigmentosa. Since then, we have watched his vision change over time. His most recent eye examination showed decreasing peripheral vision in all four visual fields, a reminder of the progressive nature of this disease.
Throughout his life, Harrison has worked harder than most people will ever know. He spent years in early intervention therapies and continues to receive support through an IEP at school, helping him navigate the challenges of both hearing and vision loss.
Yet if you met Harrison, you might never guess the obstacles he faces. He is one of the happiest children you will ever meet. He approaches life with determination, courage, and a smile that can brighten any room. One of his greatest gifts is his creativity. He is incredibly artistic and uses his imagination to create beautiful things that inspire everyone around him.
While Usher Syndrome continues to present challenges and uncertainties, Harrison teaches us every day about perseverance, hope, and joy. We are endlessly proud of him and all that he has accomplished. His courage and determination inspire everyone who knows him.
